NECS/IMACS Lecture Series

The NECS/IMACS Lecture Series is an initiative promoted by the NECS Steering Committee and the IMCS Pedagogic Board. It gathers seminars delivered by the IMACS faculty across the network that are very often contributed to NECS in various capacities. Besides offering an overview of the research areas covered at the universities belonging to the IMACS network, the lecture series sheds light on the connections and collaborative projects that also inspire NECS, and sometimes involve its members. Ranging from media literacy to experimental cinema, from a focus on specific filmmakers to another on broader methodological issues, the recordings archived in this section hope to provide both IMACS students and NECS members with a rich toolkit to navigate their journey across film and media studies.

    On Some Animal Portraits. Editing Theodor W. Adorno and Werner Herzog

    The lecture focuses on the representation of animals in Werner Herzog’s films. Many of his documentaries feature human subjects who engage in a conflictual relationship with a pristine nature or the communities that inhabit it (The White Diamond, 2004; Fata Morgana, 1971; Grizzly Man, 2005 a.o.). This relationship, necessarily destructive, either for nature or for the subject, is crystallized in several portraits of human beings and animals that double this conflictual relationship with the camera's inability to depict their cohabitation. By crossing these portraits with excerpts from Adorno's and Horkheimer's Dialectic of Enlightenment and Adorno's Aesthetic Theory, the talk proposes a heuristic montage that aims on the one hand to re-question the canonical Dialectic thanks to a set of theoretical shifts suggested by the encounter between the Aesthetic Theory and several scenes of Herzog's work, and on the other hand, to reconsider the singular relationship of the German director to the representation of nature in order to find an unprecedented critical scope.

    Les aventures extraordinaires du cinéma à l’université (de Montréal… et du monde). Naissance, reconnaissance et institutionnalisation de l’enseignement des études cinématographiques

    "Tu n’as pas honte de vouloir introduire des femmes nues dans les cours!" : c’est ce que le doyen de la Faculté des Lettres de l’Université de Montréal aurait rétorqué lorsqu’on l’a approché avec l’idée d’y implanter des cours de cinéma en 1960. Pourtant, cinq ans plus tard, l’UdeM deviendra la première université au Canada à offrir un programme de cinéma sanctionné par de hautes instances académiques. Elle sera aussi l’une des deux premières universités canadiennes à offrir, en 1974, un programme de mineure; la première, en 1994, à offrir un programme de maîtrise; et la première, en 2007, à offrir un programme de doctorat en études cinématographiques. Comment expliquer un tel revirement ? En retraçant le chemin sinueux qui a mené les études cinématographiques à une forme d’institutionnalisation, le petit voyage dans les archives proposé dans cette conférence permettra de mettre en doute l’authenticité des paroles rapportées plus haut, et de mieux comprendre leur développement comme discipline universitaire reconnue, à l’UdeM comme ailleurs dans le monde, depuis les années 1960 jusqu’à nos jours, alors qu’elles sont en train de se dissoudre dans ce que les Cahiers du cinéma considèrent être un "magma audiovisuel général".
